For the past few month, crews have been working on building the Goodwill Job Center located at the rear of the Retail Store. And next door the Goodwill Bargain Center was created.
Last Wednesday Goodwill CEO and President Tony Martini and several employees of Goodwill hosted a ribbon cutting for the new Bargain Center. Along side the staff of the Goodwill were several members of the Millington Area Chamber of Commerce.
Martini described the Bargain Center as a “last chance‚” shopping venue. Items no longer on the shelves at the Retail Store will be moved over to the Bargain Center into large blue containers. Then shoppers can buy-by-the-pound.
The ribbon cutting also gave Goodwill representatives a chance to showcase the Job Center.
The Job Center offers a variety of services, including free job search and placement assistance, career counseling, aptitude and skills assessment, job readiness classes and help building resumes and interviewing skills.
Facility features include a computer bank available for online job research and searches. One room houses a computer lab for online learning instruction/classes. And the last room in the Job Center is the Hardaway Hall named after the Memphis basketball icon Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway.
The Hardaway Hall is a meeting room that will be available free of charge to community groups and non-profit organizations for programs, meetings and presentations.
On site helping to operate the Job Center are employee specialist Richard Rife and Yolanda Taylor.
The duo has overseen the Raleigh Goodwill Job Center located at 3830 Austin Peay Highway. Rife said that facility had been successful teaching Microsoft Word basics, Excel basics and first aid.
Goodwill VP of Community Services Beth Erb said the Millington Goodwill is expecting the success of the Raleigh location Job Center.
“We have 22 computers here that are available for the community,” she said. “We are glad to get the word out today that these resources are here for the people.”
The Goodwill Job Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed daily for lunch 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.
The Goodwill Bargain Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 13,000 square foot facility features the bargain center area to sell last-chance items, a transportation hub and a salvage area.
