By Thomas Sellers Jr.
Metro Trojans 1 Metro Trojans 2BARTLETT — The Millington Metro Trojans traveled to compete in the Semifinals of their postseason against Elmore Park. The game was tied at 6-6 at halftime after Trojan Devonte Nelson picked off an Eagle pass and returned it 55 yards to the end zone.
The contest remained deadlock until the final minutes when the Eagles used a hook and lateral play for a long touchdown to end the Trojans’ season 12-6. Millington entered the contest with a 4-3 record led by quarterback Tommy Clifton. Clifton and Nelson were named Tennessee All-Stars and participated in the Tennessee/Kentucky All-Star game this past summer.
Other standout players for the Trojans include Tayveon Chalmers who led the team in rushing in the Elmore Park game. Key defensive players for Millington were David Parks and Remiello Thomas.
Clifton joined Nelson making several tackles in the playoff game. Clifton was able to hit receivers like Nelson, Kae’Vaughn Martin and Jayden Thompson behind the protection of players like Tony “TJ’ Graves, Markees Flowers and Tucker Hewes.
Millington Coach Jake Haley has been a part of the coaching staff that has coached the boys for years.
“This is bittersweet because we hope they leave us as better young men,” he said. “Hopefully they’ll make the high school program better from what they’ve learned with us. And they’ve be better men from the lessons they’ve learned with us.”
