NEW YORK — The John Mackey Award has named Alan Cross of Memphis as the John Mackey Tight End of the Week. Cross was a prep standout for the Millington Central High School Trojans and winner of The Millington Star Athlete of the Year in 2011.
The American Athletic Conference senior caught a career-high six passes for 41 yards including a tip-toe, 1-yard touchdown reception just across the goal line to spark the Memphis Tigers’ 31-point scoring onslaught as the team.
The Tigers came back from a 14-0 deficit against the Ole Miss Rebels this past Saturday. The late, first-quarter touchdown reception was the second of his season and 13th of Cross’ career as he added to his already set school record for touchdown receptions by a tight end. Honorable mentions for this week’s John Mackey Tight End of the Week include J.P. Holtz of Pittsburgh and Austin Hooper of Stanford.
Cross and the Tigers are 6-0 this season and ranked in both national polls 17th and 18th.
