Board OKs engineering firm as consultant for replacement of Raleigh-Millington bridge

By Bill Short

Flag City Logo2The Millington Board of Mayor and Aldermen has unanimously approved an engineering consultant for a project to replace the bridge on Raleigh-Millington Road.
Board members took the action during their Dec. 14 regular monthly meeting on a motion offered by Alderman Bethany Huffman and seconded by Alderman Larry Dagen.
Millington has entered into a Local Agency Project Agreement with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, which has sent it a notice to procure an engineering firm to do all the preliminary phases of the project.
After soliciting qualifications from various firms, the city’s Consultant Selection Review Committee recommended that the board employ Smith, Seckman, Reid Inc. at a lump-sum rate not to exceed $366,700.
Upon approval by City Attorney Charles Perkins, either City Manager Ed Haley or Mayor Terry Jones will be authorized to sign a contract and any related documents with SSR.
During discussion shortly before the vote, City Finance Director John Trusty said 80 percent of the contract price will be provided by TDOT. He noted that the contract includes the “environmental testing” as well as the design of the project.
In response to a question by Alderman Mike Caruthers, Trusty said the city has “sufficient funds” to pay the 20-percent match.
