Lady Cougars assert their control on District 13-3A with wins over Dyer County and Brighton

Girls basketball Rose drive to rimThe Munford Lady Cougars were having a “Super” week entering Friday’s game against the rival Brighton Lady Cardinals.
Playing defense like the Denver Broncos on Feb. 2, Munford picked up a 71-57 win over the Dyer County Lady Choctaws. Lady Cougar Johnna Jones was like Carolina Panther Cam Newton giving her team an offense boost with 25 points. Her teammate Gabby Crawford chipped in 23 points in the winning effort.
Fast forward to Friday and the Brighton Lady Cardinals entered the Munford Gymnasium looking for the upset. But Jones kept up her MVP level of play hitting 5 three-pointers against Brighton to lead her team with 21 points. Munford remained perfect in District 13-3A play beating the Lady Cardinals 62-29.
“It’s what I’ve been talking about all season long, they have seem to reach that chemistry level,” Munford Head Coach Steve Poindexter said. “Tuesday night was the closest they came to playing entire 32 minutes.
“Tonight they came out with that toughness, chemistry,” he continued. “Earlier in the year they wouldn’t finish some games. They kept their level of play up tonight.”
The Lady Cougars were ahead 5-4 in the first quarter when Jones closed out the period with a pair of triples. Munford was ahead 14-5 after one quarter.
“We started kind of slow there in the first quarter,” Poindexter acknowledge. “Then they got more into a rhythm in the second quarter.”
The Lady Cougars scored to the tune of 18 points while holding Brighton to 4 points. The only Lady Cardinals to score were Makayla Rose and Shayna Johnson.
Meanwhile the Lady Cougars got scoring from Crawford, Jones, De’Asha Banks and Dejanae Potter.
Potter scored the first bucket in the second quarter to make the score 16-5. After Rose hit a jumper in the lane, Banks score on a layup in the lane sparking a 13-0 run.
Then Jones hit a three-pointer to make the score 21-7. Next up was Crawford with a layup. At the 3:05 mark, Jones drained another triple.
Munford’s advantage grew to 20 points when Crawford made a foul shot. Potter closed out the run with a put-back bucket to make the score 29-7.
Shayna Johnson ended Brighton’s drought with a layup. Jones closed out the first half with her fifth three-pointer to make the score 32-9.
The Lady Cougars outscored Brighton 17-8 in the third quarter. The Lady Cardinals scored 12 points in the fourth period while Munford tallied 13 more points to win by 33 points.
Along with Jones’ 21 points, Crawford added 17 points and Potter had 10.
