After the No. 2 seeded Lady Choctaws advanced to the championship game beating Hardin County in the Brighton Gymnasium, it was time for the second semifinal of the night.
The host Brighton Lady Cardinals took on their rivals and No. 1 seeded Munford Lady Cougars. And the Lady Cougars set up a showdown with Dyer County beating Brighton 49-30.
The Lady Cougars jumped ahead 18-5 after one quarter behind the hot shooting of guard Johnna Jones and forward Gabby Crawford.
Jones hit two three-pointers and Crawford added 6 points in the opening period to put Munford ahead 13 points.
Jones hit another triple to start the second quarter. Later in the period, Crawford hit back-to-back jumpers to make the score 29-9. When Brighton’s Lindsey Morrissett hit a jumper at the buzzer, the Lady Cardinals were behind 29-11 at the break.
Brighton held Munford to 11 points in the second quarter. Most of the Lady Cougars’ points came courtesy of steals. Crawford and Jones made thefts on the defensive end leading to break-away baskets.
The Lady Cougars’ defense held Brighton to 6 points in the third period to make the score 40-17.
The Lady Cardinals outscored Munford 13-9 in the fourth quarter. Brighton’s defeat means the Lady Cardinals will take on Hardin County Monday night at 6 p.m. in the Brighton Gymnasium in the third-place game.
Following 15-minutes later will be the championship game between Dyer County and Munford. The Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Choctaws twice in the regular season with the last meeting going to Munford by 11 points in Dyer County.
BOYS TOURNAMENT: The 2016 District 13-3A Boys Basketball Tournament begins Friday night at 6 p.m. in the Brighton Gymnasium with the No. 2 Brighton Cardinals taking on No. 3Hardin County. Then the following semifinals will be at 7:30 p.m. between the No. 4 Munford Cougars vs. No. 1 Dyer County Choctaws.
The next round is scheduled for Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Brighton.
