Millington Arts, Recreation and Parks announces addition of the national START SMART Baseball Program

Star Staff Reports

Start Smart Baseball LogoMillington Arts, Recreation and Parks is proud to announce the addition of the nationally acclaimed START SMART Baseball Program to its program offerings this spring. START SMART Programs, created by the National Alliance for Youth Sports, help kids get ready for sports…and succeed in life. It is an innovative step-by-step approach that builds confidence and self-esteem in a fun and safe sports environment.

Start Smart was developed by top motor skill development specialists in the field of youth sports. Parent-child groups perform motor skill tasks that gradually build confidence in children while they are having fun at the same time.

Each Start Smart Program utilizes the Start Smart Sports Readiness Test to help parents objectively measure kids’ abilities. As the program progresses and children show improvement, the skills and exercises are altered so that each child remains challenged. Parents spend quality time together with their child while learning how to properly teach and support them in sports. Start Smart participants will develop proper motor skills that will allow them to enjoy and succeed in their youth

Benefits of Participation:
• Builds confidence and self-esteem in children;
• Fun and positive early experience in sport;
• Helps prepare kids for future sports participation;
• Helps prepare kids and parents for specific sport;
• Quality time together for parent and child;
• Helps parents learn how to support and teach their child;
• Provides an alternative sports program for children under 7;
• Train future youth league parents and coaches;
• Develop future participants for organized sports program.

“Millington Arts, Recreation and Parks is thrilled to offer START SMART BASEBALL,” said Kate Armitage, Arts, Recreation and Parks Director. “Start Smart Baseball is a developmentally appropriate introductory baseball program for children 3-5 years old. The program prepares children and parents for organized tee ball, baseball and softball in a fun, non-threatening environment. Age appropriate equipment from Franklin Sports® is used in teaching throwing, catching, batting, running and agility,” said Armitage.

START SMART BASEBALL is a six week, child / parent program that will meet 1 hour per week on Mondays from 6-7 PM at the Baker Community Center. Each participant will receive a ball and bat set, a glove and 2 Koosh Balls, a program t-shirt and “The Sport in Me” workbook to take home. The best part is that you and your child experience the fun of this developmental program together! The program begins on March 7. Cost is $60.00.
