Senator Lee Harris

On Feb. 18, the Kiwanis Club of Millington held its regular third Thursday meeting at the Millington Olympic Steak and Pizza with guest speaker Senator Lee Harris. Also at the meeting, the Club recognized and presented member Bob Hunt with the Lifetime Membership of Kiwanis Award.
Before Hunt’s presentation, Harris took to the floor to talk about his road toward becoming the Tennessee State Senator representing the 29th District. Harris gave updates on the legislation as well. He is a law professor and served on the Memphis City Council.  He was born and raised in Memphis, and studied at Morehouse College, followed by Yale Law School. Two years ago, Harris was elected to the Tennessee Senate. He was elected in November 2014 by the Democratic Senate Caucus of the Tennessee State Senate to the leadership position of Senate Minority Leader. He is the first black lawmaker of either party to hold a leadership position in the Tennessee State Senate. Hunt has done his share of community work over the years joining Kiwanis in November 1984. The native of Mississippi, is now the chairman of the Millington Housing Authority. Hunt has been seen in his blue Kiwanis vest working concessions at USA Stadium and taking tickets at Millington Football games. With his Lifetime Membership, Hunt’s dues will be paid forever.
