At moments the strategy worked for David Wampler’s Lady Cardinals against the Lady Charger standout. But Bland had enough highlights in the Brighton Gymnasium to help her team outlast the Lady Cardinals 49-40.
The score was 8-5 in favor of Covington with Bland scoring 5 of those points. The pace picked up for both teams in the second quarter with Brighton outscoring the Lady Chargers 12-7.
The Lady Cardinals scoring burst was lead by T’aliyah Brown driving to the rim for a bucket. Brighton started the second period with a 9-0 run to gain a 14-8 advantage.
Covington responded with a 7-0 rally to regain the lead. Bland made a pair of foul shots to make the tally 15-14. But before the halftime buzzer, Lady Cardinal Albanie Dunn drained a three-pointer giving Brighton a 17-15 advantage.
In the third quarter the Lady Cardinals tried to maintain the momentum with buckets in the lane from Brown and Demiyah Gatlin giving them a 23-17 lead.
The Lady Chargers had the response once again going on an 11-0 run to end the third quarter with a 28-23 advantage. Covington outscored Brighton 21-17 in the fourth quarter to earn the win and season sweep over its Tipton County rivals.
