Reunion Tour: Lady Cardinal Tennis duo reunion season ends at State

By Thomas Sellers Jr.
MURFREESBORO – The youngest doubles team to step on the Adams Tennis Complex court last Thursday arrived from Brighton.
The Lady Cardinal pair of Andi Coulston and MaCauley Jones are members of the Class of 2021 and stepped on the stage of the 2018 TSSAA Large Class State Girls’ Doubles Tennis Tournament.
“This is their second year actually playing together,” Brighton Lady Cardinal Head Tennis Coach Shay Johnson said. “They played together in middle school when they were in the seventh grade.
“So they kind of reunited in high school,” she continued. “They work very well together. MaCauley plays the back row and Andi plays the net. So it’s just the Dream Team.”
Johnson watched her ideal duo take on Dobyns Bennett doubles team of Lainey Hill and Willa Rogers in the Quarterfinals.
Win or lose, Johnson said the match up as a chance for her girls to mature once again during Season One.
“Getting them the experience and getting them here to State we hope to advance,” she said. “Maybe next year get to the third and then in their third year win State. We’re just taking it step by step and using their youth to our advantage.”
Johnson said after a successful year and reaching State, the duo of Coulston and Jones will become a fixture at Brighton High School.
“They’re together for now,” she concluded. “Just seeing the level of competition we’ll be playing against will make us better prepare for next year and the year after that and the year after that.”
Hill and Rogers were able to advance over Coulston and Jones in two sets. The Dobyns Bennett pair was able to reach the championship match to take on Brentwood’s Evie Calhoun and Georgia Fischer. The State title went home to Brentwood.
