J.C. Floyd celebrated his 99th birthday, at Lucy Baptist Church, on Sept . 1 with more than 100 friends and family members. James Casey (JC) Floyd is the eighth of 10 children born to Richard Perry and Carrie Durham Floyd, September 8, 1919, in Tishomingo, Miss. His last sibling, Gaye Grimes, passed two years ago.
Floyd was married to Vivian Loveless Hart, of Paden, Miss., for 60 years before her death in 2000. JC and Vivian raised five children, Joan, Anthony, Billy, Casey (deceased) and Janet, all from Millington. JC also enjoys 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.
Floyd moved to Shelby County in 1943, where he worked at several different jobs, before finally getting a full time job with Civil Service on the Naval Station as an electrician, a job he learned in the 4H Club through the Rural Electrification Program. He retired in 1982 after 35 years. JC is a member of First Baptist Church-Millington, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Millington Senior Citizens and a Mason.
Retirement never slowed him down. He works on appliances, tractors and anything else that needs fixing. He is a Jack-of-all-Trades and master of several. He still cuts his grass, cleans out the flowerbeds, picks up tree limbs and blows off the patio. Teresa Wells, of Millington, his granddaughter, said he is not only the wittiest man she knows, but has a memory sharp as a tack. If you want to know about someone or something that happened a long time ago, just asked him and he can tell you everything in great detail.
“We are blessed,” Teresa said, “to still have him cracking jokes at the simplest things, he is a hoot. We love him dearly. Happy 99th Birthday Papa JC. We can’t wait to plan your 100th next year.”
