Big Creek Church to celebrate Homecoming this Sunday

Star Staff Reports

A century ago in time, this vintage photo includes (from left): Emit Crenshaw, Gladys Crenshaw Bolton, Leah Crenshaw Hart, Jesse Crenshaw and Dimples Baker. Photo courtesy of Karen Crenshaw, whose grandfather, Emit is pictured here along with his sister, Leah. The others represented are cousins. The photo is believed to have been taken near the Big Creek Cemetery more than 100 years ago. Grandchildren descended from three of these early settlers attended Homecoming 2017. They include: (from Grandfather Emit): Karen Crenshaw, Kenny Crenshaw, Susie Price and Linda Eason; (from Grandmother Leah): Patty Arndt; and (from Grandmother Gladys Bolton): Bobby Bolton and Dale Rast.

First organized in the 1930s, the Big Creek Cemetery Homecoming gathering was originally held each year in August. Families, church members and townspeople living in the Big Creek neighborhood would tend the grounds and cook a feast of Brunswick stew while sharing memories from days long past.

Family members with loved ones buried at Big Creek as well as interested residents of Shelby County are invited to participate in this special tradition during our 2018 Homecoming event held on Sunday, Oct. 14 beginning at 1 p.m. Donations are kindly appreciated in exchange for a barbecue meal.

In the spirit of community, guests are asked to bring desserts to share. In case of rain, guests will meet in a reserved room at nearby Big Creek Baptist Church.

The church is located at 6839 Big Creek Church Road in Millington. For more information, call 872-4702.
