MATCH OF THE NIGHT: Trojan Wrestling has intense moments against Kingsbury Falcons

By Thomas Sellers Jr.

One of the longest traditions at a wrestling tournament is the award of “Match of the Night.”

If the prize was being handed out Nov. 27 in the Millington Wrestling Gymnasium on the campus of the Civic Center, Millington Trojan Jayden Monroy vs. Kingsbury Falcon Genaro Salazar would have been the winner.

The climatic moment of the 170-pound battle was when Salazar was less than a second away from victory. Monroy’s shoulders were flat on the black mat featuring a golden circle. With half of his body extended beyond the circle, Monroy heard the urgent cries of the home crowd.

“Yes Sir, I was about to be pinned,” Monroy acknowledged. “My shoulders where on the mat and I had to give everything just to get them off.

“He picked up my legs and got me on my back,” the sophomore continued. “I was down and I heard everybody screaming. I just bridged up on my neck and threw myself over. It worked and honestly it surprised me.”

Monroy used the energy from the crowd, his natural strength and lessons from Head Coach William Richardson to capture the victory by pinfall at 3:32.

“I got pretty confident once I got the advantage,” he recalled. “I’m pretty good at using my weight. I couldn’t find his head at first. I kind of smacked him honestly. Then I just squeezed him with everything I had. Eventually I just kept laying on him waiting on the referee to call it. I looked at him and he eventually called it.

“It felt great,” Monroy said of the home crowd support. “When I stood up, I smiled because it felt good.”

Monroy hopes that moment is just the start of a great Trojan career giving him a way to pay tribute to his stepfather Jacob Schorr.

“It’s great with this being my first year wrestling,” Monroy concluded. “My step-dad wrestled out here a couple of years back. It just feels good to be out here doing something he once did.”
