Board members took the action Monday night during their regular monthly meeting on a motion offered by Alderman Al Bell and seconded by Alderman Larry Dagen.
The ordinance was unanimously passed on first reading at the board’s July 8 meeting and will become effective on Sept. 1.
In 2015, the board decided to make the city’s Building Codes the same as those in the county and to have inspections conducted by the Memphis and Shelby County Office of Construction Code Enforcement.
The new ordinance repeals Chapter 3 of Title 7 of the Municipal Code and adopts a new Chapter 3 titled, “Fire Codes.”
City Finance Director John Trusty has noted that the wording in the new chapter regarding “fire lanes, key lock boxes, violations and penalties” is the same as the previous one.
He has also said any previous ordinances that are “in conflict” with this ordinance are repealed.
