COVINGTON — The Millington Trojans had the chance to be “Tipton County Champions” entering Friday night’s game in Covington. The Trojans walked into the Covington Gymnasium Friday night owners of wins over the other two Tipton County schools Brighton and Munford. Millington had a chance for the trifecta against the host Chargers. But Covington protected its home court behind the performances of Bobby Shanks, Reggie Holmes and Malcolm Taylor to win 73-52. In the early moments the Trojans took an early 5-4 lead when Demarius Curry hit a shot in the lane. Then the Chargers closed out the first quarter on a 13-3 run with Shanks draining an NBA-range three-pointer to make the score 17-8. The Trojans tried to rally in the second quarter with Julian Daughtry and Andrew Banks hitting shots to make the score 18-12. Holmes snapped any momentum for the Trojans with a three-pointer to make the score 21-12. Banks tried to keep Millington within shouting distance hitting jumpers. But with the score 28-18, Holmes hit another trey to help Covington build a 36-23 lead at the break.

Covington kept pace with the Trojans in the third quarter outscoring Millington 21-17. The Chargers held the Trojans to 12 points in the fourth quarter while scoring 16 to earn Tipton County’s first victory over Millington this basketball season.
