Boys’ Soccer Star of the Season
Cole Creasey
The Tipton-Rosemark Academy senior had another stellar season during the Rebels historic run. Creasy, a two-time Best of the Preps forward, led the Rebels in goals this past season reaching double figures. His contribution as a scorer and leader helped TRA win its first postseason game at FACS in extra time.
Baseball Star of the Season
Austin Cousar
The Munford senior had the brains and talent to contribute to the Cougars return to the Class 3A State Tournament. Cousar finished in the top 10 of the Munford Class of 2017 along with baseball and golf teammate Josh Hatsfield. During the baseball season Cousar was one of the leading batters for the Cougars. Cousar was named All-District, All-Region and to the West Tennessee All-Stars.
Softball Star of the Season
Marissa Moss
The Brighton senior has been a vital part of the Lady Cardinals three-straight District 13-3A Tournament titles. This year she added pitching to her responsibilities in helping the Lady Cardinals return back to State. She was the No. 4 hitter and was among the leaders on the team in batting average, RBIs and on-base percentage. Moss was named to the West Tennessee All-Stars, Best of the Preps among several honors.
Softball Pitching Star of the Season
Rachel Whitley
The Tipton-Rosemark Academy Lady Rebel junior hurler led the team in wins. She had the Lady Rebels a win away from reaching State. TRA’s huge overall winning percentage was sparked by Whitley leading the team in strikeouts.
Baseball Pitching Star of the Season
Corey Simmons
The Munford senior pitcher was named an West Tennessee All-Star along with teammates Cousar, Garrett Baugh and Kyle Kelly. Simmons, also known as C-Smooth, earned his nickname this past season for being the go-to pitcher for big games. He was the ace on the staff and won the Sub-State clinching game against Collierville with a complete-game effort.
Boys’ Track Star of the Season
Walter Miller
Walter Miller Jr. will go down as one of the best individual track sprinters in Millington Central High School history. He added to his two-silver medals in 2016 with a three-medal performance at the 2017 State Track meet in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay races. Miller helped a group of young Trojans (Eddie Macklin, Corey Smith and Zach Johnson) take fifth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:23.53. In his first event of that day, Miller earned third in the 400m. Miller finished second in his final 200m race for the Trojans.
Girls’ Newcomer of the Year
Andreanna Hood
Brighton freshman Andreanna “Anna” Hood reached the 2017 Class 3A State Meet in the Discus and Shot Put. Hood threw her personal best in the discus with a toss of 102 feet. She finished ninth, one place away from a medal. The ninth-grader did reach the medal stand in the shot put with a throw of 38-feet, 4 inches to take sixth place. Hood has only started to tap into her potential on the track. She is a top student involved in other school activities like band. Hood will be a regular sight on the medal stand in Murfreesboro for years to come.
Boys’ Newcomer of the Year
Tommy Clifton
The name Tommy Clifton in Millington Trojan athletics is common. Tommy Clifton Sr. was a football standout and is currently a coach for the Trojans. Tommy Clifton Jr. was a part of Millington’s first undefeated football team as a full back back in the 90s. Now it’s Tommy III’s turn to add his name to the Millington athletic record books. The youngest Clifton was a part of the Trojan Baseball team as a freshman playing all around the infield. But the sport that introduced Tommy II to the public this past year was football. A combination of speed and intelligence, Clifton was handed the quarterback duties by Head Coach Chris Michael. Clifton showed progress throughout the season in his decision making, accuracy and strength.
