On May 6, Patriot Bank President Larry Jackson arrived on the campus of Millington Central High School to deliver counselor Ashleigh Currie two certificates and envelopes.
Jackson allowed Currie and MCHS Principal Mark Neal a chance to present the 2020 Student of the Year awards to male recipient Delmarious Jones and female winner Emily Landis.
“I’m in disbelief,” Jones said. “I can’t really believe it. It feels amazing to be recognized by Patriot Bank.”
Landis was in disbelief as well to be recognized.
“It’s surprising,” she said. “Finding the classes I like, I discovered this year in Ms. Watkins class and being a Library worker what I like.”
Landis has always had a love for style. During her tenure at MCHS she took two years of cosmetology from Ginger LeBlanc.
Her mother Ashley Summerfield noted the five different hairstyles of Emily during the 2019-20 school year.
“That’s the main reason I want to go to cosmetology school,” Landis said. “Every time I would get my hair done it would make me feel really good. I want everybody else to feel like that too.”
While Landis made her mark at school as the girl of many hairstyles, Jones worked quietly in the background at his passion of mechanics. He plans to go to mechanic school to pursue a career in automotive repairs.
“I really like doing that,” he concluded. “I was surprised to get this award when I was so busy working on cars.”
Jones was joined by his mother Jessica Griggs and girlfriend Viviana Sykes for his presentation.
