Understandably, there is a lot of fear in the world right now. This fear may loom even larger depending—at least in part–on the view of this world one takes.
If you are of a mind that you are simply an accident of nature, a result of unguided, random mutations of organic matter–then you are without ultimate purpose.
This world would be all there is for you. There would be no ultimate meaning in your living or dying.
Anxiety without an answer. Pressure without any purpose. Effort without any eternality.
If you are a believer, you would conclude that a personal God hand-crafted you in your mother’s womb and you have eternal value to Him.
You would have a purpose in this life, and a destination in the next. As the old hymn “Turn your eyes upon Jesus” reminds us: “the things of earth will grow strangely dim; In the light of His glory and grace.”
The things of earth are thus either looming large–or fading dimly–in our eyes, according to our points of view.
After all, the statistics of death are 1:1. No one will get out of here alive.
We all live under the shadow of that truth.
That is not morbid to me. It is merely the facts.
I find I am personally looking at life more this way: Let’s say that I am stopping by your home for a late dinner on my way on long a trip.
Unfortunately, just as I arrive, the power goes out. The lights go dark.
Dinner cannot even finish cooking. You are embarrassed and very apologetic. It’s inconvenient and was not at all what you planned.
But we just order pizza and we all sit in your yard in the glare of my headlights for the two hours I planned to stay.
Later, when I arrive, I call you and we both laugh about the power loss. It was merely a “bump in the road” on the way to my ultimate destination.
What if the 28, or 58 or even 88 years on earth will one day seem no different?
