Cougars remain undefeated after Southwind

In a showdown of undefeated teams, the Munford Cougars held on to beat the Southwind Jaguars 14-12. The Cougars (4-0, 2-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead Friday night behind two Wilson Lowry touchdowns. Lowry’s first score came in the opening quarter with an 11-yard run. Then he added a 2-yard score in the second quarter to put the Cougars ahead 14-0 at the break. In the third quarter the Jaguars got on the scoreboard when Kameron Williams scored on a short run to make the score 14-6.  The Jaguars (4-1, 1-1) had a chance to tie the contest in the fourth quarter after Tyler Brewer scored from 3-yards out. Southwind missed on the two-point conversion when the pass attempt failed. Munford returns home this week to take on the MLK Prep Rams with a 7 p.m. kickoff. IN OTHER ACTION: The Brighton Cardinals improved to 3-1 on the season with a 37-20 victory over the Kirby Cougars. Brighton (3-1, 1-1) jumped out 16-0 with touchdowns from Malik Matthews and Breland Austin. The Cardinals’ safety put the Cougars down by 16 points. Ahead 16-6, Brighton took a 23-6 lead into the locker room after Matthews rushed for a 5-yard TD.  The Cardinals got two scores in the second half courtesy of Lance West and Zach Camp touchdown runs. Camp led the Cardinals with 77 yards on the ground.  The Cardinals are off this weekend and will return to action Oct. 2 at Overton. This past Friday, the Tipton-Rosemark Academy Rebels took on the Fayette Academy Vikings. The Vikings earned a 20-7 win over the Rebels. TRA’s only score came when Ethan Carpenter caught a 29-yard pass from Peyton Ryan. The Rebels will host Middleton this Friday night.
