Flag City Freedom Celebration set for June 30
The 2022 Flag City Freedom Celebration will be held on June 30 this year. The event will be held at the Millington Sports Complex, located at 4885 Bill Knight Road. This event is only possible through support from the community leaders. We hope your business can help us bring the community together to celebrate our independence. Camp to be held at FUMC
Starting June 27 and completing on July 1, the Day Shore: A Day Camp Partnership Lakeshore Camp & Retreat Center will be held. The location is First United Methodist Church at 8029 Wilkinsville Road in Millington from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The drop off time is 7:30 a.m. and pick up time is by 5:30 p.m. There is a cost and to register contact 872-4414 (office) or Debby Clifton at 574-8466.
Summer of Fun at Aycock Park
The Summer of Fun will be held at Aycock Park Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The Park is located at 7330 Renda Street. Things began June 2 and will continue throughout the summer with June 23 Mason Jar Aquariums and the Millington Police Department, July 7 Bottle Rocket Craft, July 14 Volleyball and DIY lava lamps, July 21 four-square, water play and the Millington Fire Department and July 28 Shelby Forest State Park Services and Animal Demonstration.
Millington Farmer’s Market in Business
The Millington Farmers Market located at 5152 Easley Street is still seeking new vendors. The Market is open the third Saturday of each month. For more information, call 873-5770.
Senior Exercise
The senior exercise club meets Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Baker Community Center located at 7942 Church Street in Millington. For more information, call 873-5770.
Charles-Bartlett to Quito roads closed until 2023
Shelby County officials announced in April an extensive road closure through next year for a drainage improvement project.
Charles Bartlett Road between Quito Road and Oglesby Road will be closed starting May 2 through January 22, 2023. The county says the project requires installing a new concrete box culvert across Charles Bartlett Road. Charles Bartlett Road will be open to local traffic only from Quito Road and Oglesby Road.
Millington Senior Club
The Millington Senior Citizen’s Club is meeting again Wednesdays at 10 a.m. with entertainment weekly. The club meets at the Baker Community Center located at 7942 Church Street. For more information, call 873-5770.
Road Construction in Memphis
Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews began installing signs for the paving project. Standard Construction is the prime contractor for this $4.2 million paving project. The 2.3 miles between Perkins Extended and I-240 has an estimated completion date of September 30. Motorists will see work during the day, as crews will be working seven days a week. The lane closures will take place at night between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Crews will be working on the handicap ramps during the day between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day. Single lane closures began this weekend and will continue each night. Weather permitting, daytime single lane closures will take place from 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m. on specific days following the nighttime work. Poplar Avenue sees approximately 47,000 vehicles a day, and you are asked to plan ahead and look for alternate routes.
Summer of Fun at Millington Library
Six weeks of fun started with the Millington Public Library Kickoff Party on June 4 and will run through July 16.
Registration is required for all summer reading programs and they are free and open to the public. Age groups are children (infants up to 10 years old), tween/teen (11-18 years old) and adults (19-plus), and readers fill out a paper or online reading log and earn weekly prizes.
The Library also has a grand prize drawing for each age group.
The Kiwanis Club of Millington has donated multiple $50 Amazon gift cards and other prizes. “The Library is also thankful for the generous donations from our area businesses including: Jack’s, Auntie Em’s Cupcakes, Xcelsior Martial Arts, the Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis Fire Museum, and the Children’s Museum of Memphis,” said director Stephanie Kinsler.
Weekly Storytimes on Wednesdays at 11:15 a.m. and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. and weekly family movie screenings. Ocean themed, hands-on craft activities on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m.
“The Library has partnered with several local organizations to make this year’s programs better than ever,” Kinsler said.
“Excelsior Martial Arts has generously donated a coupon for a free lesson and will be here on June 23 to introduce our summer readers to Tae Kwon Do,” Kinsler said. “The Library has also partnered with the Millington YMCA to offer a Water Safety presentation along with their meal services program on Friday, June 24, from 1-3 p.m.
“ We will have lots of professional performers including: Mr. Bond’s Science Guys, Andi Lehman’s Life with Animals shows, Runaway Puppet Theater Show. Summer reading programs help children improve and retain the skills they learned during the school year. We hope that parents will make a daily or weekly trip to the library a part of their summer routine and participate along with their kids,” Kinsler concluded.
