Brighton and Munford golfers move onto Regionals

Brighton’s Brett Wilkins won the 2016 District 13-3A Boys individual title to join Aubrey Jones as Cardinal golf champions this season.

The Munford  High School Golf Team finished runner up in the 2016 District 13-3A Tournament yesterday at Pickwick State Park. The Dyer County Choctaws took first place.

Both teams will move onto next week’s Region 7-3A Golf Tournament.

Two of The Millington Star top golfers battled it out for first-place medalist. Munford’s No. 1 player, Josh Hatfield and Brighton’s Brett Wilkins played a two-hole playoff for the title.

After the first 9 holes Hatfield and Wilkins were tied at a 39. Hatfield took the lead after the next few holes and was ahead by 2 strokes. On holes 16 and 17, the pair were tied again to finish in a tie after 18. Both Wilkins and Hatfield shot a 77 and were tied for first place.

The playoff grabbed the attention of most in attendance. All teams watched along as Hatfield and Wilkins parred the first hole. When Hatfield’s putt lipped out on the second hole Wilkins earned the win.

Brighton’s Aubrey Jones won first place in the girls tournament. She shot a 77. Regionals will take place next week for the boys and girls.
