The River City Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met at Northside United Methodist Church in Jackson on Friday with 173 other DAR members to attend the fall workshop. After the opening session and the introduction of national and state officers all members attended breakout sessions.  Lunch was provided and the 2014 National Awards Presentation wrapped up the meeting. Those attending from Millington chapter were front row from left Nancy Foshee, Patty Naumann, Jackie Garner, and Carolyn Stricklin; and back row from left Stephanie Bohrman, Carolyn Sinquefield, Paula Raines, Ann Holzemer, and Teresa Ross.

Month of August The Millington Lions Club is holding its Pancake Breakfast during the 2014 International Goat Days Festival at the USA Stadium in Millington Sept. 13 from 6 to 11 a.m. The Club holds this event to raise money to provide the members of the community who are in need with the gift of sight and hearing. The funds collected pay for eye exams for glasses and auditory exams for hearing aids, as well as providing financial assistance for eye and ear surgeries.  The Lions Club is asking local businesses for donations and/or sponsorships to provide food products and/or monies to cover the cost for food and supplies for the event. The projected menu is coffee, milk, orange juice, sausage, bacon and of course pancakes with syrup and jellies. Sponsorship packages are also available with Gold Sponsor ($100 or more) or Silver Sponsor ($50-$99). The Millington Lions Club meets at Olympic Steakhouse in Millington every second and fourth Tuesday at noon. The Lions Clubs works around the world for visually impaired and hearing impaired. The public is welcome to join the Club members and to make additional inquiries.

West Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church located at 3099 West Union Road is having a series of sermons based on the book of Hebrew, entitled “Jesus is Greater.” Morning worship service is at 11 a.m.  Come join the church for a message.  For more information, call 876-5757, ext 3.

Millington Airport Authority Board of Commissioners Meetings are scheduled at 3:30 p.m. every third Tuesday at Millington Regional Jetport. For more information, call 873-5796.

Jordan’s Thrifts, Gifts & Java located at 6646 Highway 51 North by Plantation Oaks Hotel will be starting classes on Jan. 6 from 6-8 p.m. for the following classes: Domestic Violence, Shelter from the Storm (Overcoming Sexual Abuse) and Celebrate Recovery (Overcoming Addictions). Tops (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly)  meets on Fridays from 9-11 a.m. at Millington Community Center. Come join the group to have fun. For more information, call Doris Landerman at 573-8536.

The Exchange Club of Millington meets at Old Timer’s Restaurant in Millington at noon every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Guest are always welcomed. For more information, call 872-8888.

Join Jeremy Rochell every Monday morning from 9 a.m.-noon for an educational program to make landscape improvements in local parks. This program is open to all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult or pre-register at 7942 Church Street in Millington.  All materials will be provided.  No fee to participate.

Soul Out Ministries’ Hot Nutritional Meal are served every Thursday at the Baker Community Center from noon to 1 p.m. The program is affiliated with Dream Interfaith Ministries and all donations are tax deductible. For more information, call program founder/coordinator Carol Jenkins 949-1675.

Aug. 28
A Journey with God and Cancer: On Aug. 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Temple United Methodist Church at 4404 Sykes Road in Millington will begin a facilitated group to offer hope and encouragement for all who’ve been touched by cancer. Find the spiritual support needed to navigate this challenging season. This group is for anyone who has been impacted by cancer — those in active treatment, survivors, caregivers and concerned loved ones. Sept. 5-6
Do your part for the park, Town of Brighton Playground Project will be held Sept. 5 with music in the park and a BBQ contest from 7-11 p.m. Then on Sept. 6, the 5K will be held starting at 7 a.m. with vendors, games and local entertainment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Donkey Basketball will take place at 6 p.m. All money raised during the Founders Day Celebration will be used to purchase new playground equipment for the park.

Sept. 6
Wild Game Dinner will be held at Millington First Baptist Church located at 5010 West Union Ave. Millington FBC is hosting their annual wild game dinner on Saturday.  The wild game dinner will begin at 5 p.m. (doors open for vendors and appetizers at 2 p.m.)with our special guest speaker Brodie Swisher of Paris.  There is a cost for a wild game dinner, which can be purchased in the church office or the church event desk.  For more information contact the church office at 872-2264 or visit our website at fbcmillington.org.

Millington FBC is hosting a car show in conjunction with their annual wild game dinner on Saturday, Sept. 6.  The car show will accept cars for entry from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (there is a fee for cars).  The car show will be from 1- 4p.m. with awards to be given at 5 p.m. before the wild game dinner.  Admission is free to attend.  Concessions will be provided.  All proceeds from the event will go to the Millington Crisis Center.  For more information, contact the church office at 872-2264 or visit our website at fbcmillington.org.

Upcoming events
River City Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will mark the 227th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention at the Millington Library on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. with Millington Mayor Terry Jones. To celebrate Constitution Week Sept. 17-23, there will be a display and some of the members will be in 17th century apparel. The public is invited to attend the event.
