The Memphis and Shelby County Regents Council Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday, June 14 at the Racquet Club of Memphis in celebration of Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the flag of the Unites States. Continental Congress passed the flag act on June 14, 1777. Special guest speaker was Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, and the Bartlett Police Department served as the color guard. There were representatives from the Chickasaw District’s ten (10) chapters including the River City Chapter from Millington. City of Munford, The recycling container is located at the south end of Haddad’s Department Store parking lot on Crigger Circle. Only newsprint, corrugated cardboard and plastics are collected at this site. Additional materials are collected at the Tipton County Recycling Center located at the landfill on Highway 51. Computers may be recycled free of charge at Expertek, 70 Munford Avenue.

Munford Parks and Recreation Partners with the “Y” to Provide Summer Camps Munford Parks and Recreation has partnered with the Millington Family YMCA to provide summers camps for children who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. The summer day camp starts May 27-Aug. 1, Hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is a registration fee. Camps will be held at the old Munford Library located at 87 College Street, and will include trips to the parks in the city of Munford, the library and skating rink. Summer Day Camp Programs provide an exciting, safe environment for children and teens to explore the outdoors, build confidence, develop skills and make lasting friendships and memories, so they can grow as individuals and leaders. June 27-28 The Millington Crisis Center’s Big, Big Sale will take place the weekend of June 27-28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 8133 Wilkinsville Road in Millington. The event will take place rain or shine. All proceeds will benefit the Millington Crisis Center.

NFL Pro Bowler and Carolina Panther star Greg Hardy is returning back to his hometown this summer for the I Go Hardy Camp for boys and girls. The football camp will be held July 12 for ages 6-17. The football camp is limited to 275. And there will be a cheerleading mini-camp for ages 6-12 that same day. The space there is limited to 25 spots. The Millington Trojan Basketball Camp 2014 will be held July 7-10 (noon to 3 p.m.). There is a cost and early registration discount if paid by May 31 making checks payable to Trojans Head Coach Rob Sabau. Included in the fee is a camp T-shirt and personal evaluation by coaches. Sabau will direct the camp with Trojan coaches and players as camp directors. Camp participants should come dress and ready to play basketball with basketball shoes, shorts, socks and T-shirt. July 2 Celebrate Munford presents “Celebrate Independence” on July 2 at City Park on College Street in Munford. Starting at 7:30 p.m., the Navy Band Mid-South’s contemporary entertainment ensemble will perform a 45-minute concert. A spectacular fireworks display will be the grand finale.
Food and beverage will be offered for sale in support of the Munford High School Band’s fundraising efforts to attend the Macy’s Day Parade in 2015. T-shirts and other items will also be made available at the Celebrate Munford table. Rest room facilities will be provided in the park. Limited handicap parking will be available in the City Hall parking lot at the corner of Munford Avenue and College Street. The public is encouraged to bring their own seating for this free event.
July 3 Rock the Block is coming back to Walker Park on Thursday, July 3 beginning at 7 pm. Plan to join the party as it will kick off the Independence Day holiday with live music, activities for the entire family, free food, extended splash pad hours, games and, after dark, a fireworks display as we celebrate America – all right in the heart of Atoka at Walker Park. Rain date will be Saturday, July 5. Food Free community picnic will be offered – courtesy of FastTimes – including hot dogs, chips, drinks, snow cones and watermelon. Food will be on a first come-first served basis so plan to arrive early. Seating will be limited so bring your lawnchairs and blankets for grass seating. Activities Bounce houses, face painting stations, picture booths, splash pad activities, dunk tank, sand volleyball and more Live music throughout the evening on the main stage After dark, fireworks from the heart of Walker Park. Fireworks will be visible from surrounding subdivisions as well Parking at Atoka Elementary with free shuttle service to Walker Park. Shuttle service will begin running at 5 pm and will end when all guests have left Walker Park. Parking at Walker Park will be limited to handicap-tagged vehicles only. On-street parking will be allowed in the emergency lane on Meade Lake Road, in the Templeton Farms subdivision and on side streets off Walker Parkway including Stroud Circle, Edith Lane and Bouler Drive. Police officers will be available to assist pedestrians in crossing at Meade Lake Road and Walker Parkway.
On-street parking will not be allowed on Walker Parkway (east of Meade Lake Road), Farmers Trail or Kearns Circle. Vehicles parked in those areas will be subject to ticketing and towing.
