On March 13, the Millington Optimist Club recognized Alyssa Chandler, a student at Millington Central High School for her winning essay entitled “How Dreams Lead to Success.” The presentation of the winner’s certificate and medallion was by Cathy Barrington, secretary of the club. The Millington Optimist Club meets the fourth Thursday each month at the Pig N Whistle restaurant on Kerrville Rosemark Road. Chandler’s winning essay will be entered into state competition and if selected winner there will go to the Tennessee District Optimist competition. Winner in the state competition will receive a $2,500 cash scholarship. Chandler has said that when she graduates this year she plans to attend The University of Tennessee at Martin. Pictured in the presentation are from left Cathy Barrington, Millington Optimist Secretary essay competition winner Alyssa Chandler, Alyssa’s mother who is an office worker at Millington Elementary School.  The purposes of the Optimist Club is to develop Optimism as a philosophy of life utilizing the tenets of the Optimist Creed, to promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs, to inspire respect for law, to promote patriotism and work for international accord and friendship among all people, to aid and encourage the development of youth in the belief that the giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world.

Jordan’s Thrifts, Gifts & Java located at 6646 Highway 51 North by Plantation Oaks Hotel will be starting classes on Jan. 6 from 6-8 p.m. for the following classes: Domestic Violence, Shelter from the Storm (Overcoming Sexual Abuse) and Celebrate Recovery (Overcoming Addictions). City of Munford, The recycling container is located at the south end of Haddad’s Department Store parking lot on Crigger Circle.  Only newsprint, corrugated cardboard and plastics are collected at this site.  Additional materials are collected at the Tipton County Recycling Center located at the landfill on Highway 51. Computers may be recycled free of charge at Expertek, 70 Munford Avenue.

The Kiwanis Club of Millington will host its annual Pancake Breakfast at Baker Community Cetner on Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon. Come enjoy a hearty breakfast with proceeds going to youth and elderly community needs.

Come join us for a night of fun for Trivia Night with  Ignatius Brown on Saturday March, 29 at St. William Catholic Church, located at 4932 Easley Ave, Millington.  Play starts at 7 p.m. Come early and decorate your table.  Prize for best table.  Bring your own food, drinks and snacks.  There is a fee per table of 8 for a team.  Registration must be in by March 22 to the church office. SYS Track Sign-ups
Shelby Youth Sports Track & Field registrations are underway on Tuesdays and Thursdays during February from 6-8 p.m. at Exline’s Pizza in Millington located at 8507 Highway 51 North. Practice starts Feb. 20 with the location to be determined. The first track meet will be on March 22 with the season ending the last week in May. There are fees; cost $135 and covers $55 SYS fee; $40 program fee for trophy/banquet; and $40 uniforms. Breakfast with the Easter Bunny will be held April 12 at the Millington Masonic Lodge located at 7964 Highway 51 North in Millingtonright next to Grand Buffet from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. There is a cost. Egg-stra fun awaits you at this family style breakfast. Enjoy scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, orange juice, milk, coffee and water as you await the arrival of the Easter Bunny. Millington Elementary is having a School Carnival April 12. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. located at 6445 William Osteen Drive (north of Navy Road off of Bethuel). There will be concessions, inflatables, games, vendors and silent auction. The event will  go on rain or shine.
