Recently, the Tennessee Society Daughters of 1812 attended the 200th Anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner held in Baltimore at Fort McHenry as guests of the Society of the War of 1812 in Maryland. The group toured many War of 1812 sites, then went to Fort McHenry for the
dedications of the new cannons donated by the Daughters 1812 and Sons of the War of 1812, plus the firing of the cannons. A wreath was laid at the statue of the commander during the battle, Major George Armistead. On Saturday, a meal was served on the grounds of Fort McHenry under a tent. In attendance were Vice President Joseph Biden, Senator Nancy Pelosi, the Maryland Governor, Baltimore Mayor, plus city and state officials, for the special program followed by the spectacular fireworks with music provided by the U.S. Marine Band.
On Sunday morning, a memorial service was held near the flagpole with General Colin Powell as guest speaker. There was a reading of all four stanzas of “The Star Spangled Banner.” At 9 a.m. at the precise moment that the historic flag was raised 200 years ago inspiring Francis
Scott Key to write the poem that became our National Anthem, a full-size replica 15-star and 15-stripe flag was raised over Fort McHenry. The Tipton County Health Department Announces free Flu Vaccine Event Nov. 14. A limited number of free flu vaccines will be available for adults and children during a Drive-through Point of Dispensing Exercise to be held Friday at Cobb-Parr Memorial Park off Highway 51. Free vaccines will be provided from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. or until all vaccine is given. The injectable flu vaccine (the “flu shot”) will be available during this event, in limited quantities.
