MUFREESBORO — Since the arrival of Bernard Ivie to Munford, the Cougar track program has become one of the best in the state. A sign of the strength has been State qualifying athletes like Buck Wakefield, Evan Sisung, Dominga Smith and Triple Jump State champion Crystal Williams to name just a few. The athlete keeping the program’s streak alive in 2014 was Rebecca Lee. The senior comes from a family of athletes with her older sister Robneisha earning her spot in Munford Lady Cougar folklore as a leader of the best basketball team in school history. In 2012-13, Robneisha was the leading scorer on the Lady Cougar squad to reach Sub-State. Rebecca made it to State in track. Last Thursday the younger Lee took center stage at the Middle Tennessee State University Track Stadium as part of the Class 3A State Discus finals. Lee, the daughter of Robert and Miesha Lee, tossed a best of 87 feet in her three attempts. Despite finishing out of the medals, Lee was proud to represent her school, the program and her family. “I’m happy but I must admit it was kind of rough coming up here because I didn’t know what to expect,” Lee acknowledged. “Now that I am here, I thought I would do better. I should have practiced more.” Lee said her senior year was only her second season of throwing the discus. It was the previous week Lee threw her personal record of 94 feet and 11 inches. “It says a lot for her being here among the best to her talent,” Munford Throwing Coach Brandon Usery said. “At Munford we have a proud tradition because it shows the dedication of our coaches and the caliber of student-athletes we’re coaching. They hav” great abilities and work hard to reach their best.” Lee said reaching her best in 2014 has been simply fun. “I’ve set records, broken records and made it to State,” she said. “It’s a special way to cap off my senior year.
“My mom is going to be proud,” Lee concluded. “A lot people are going to be really happy, especially my dad. My dad is so into sports. I did the best I could so I’m happy too.”
