GIRLS BASKETBALL: Dyer County 82, Brighton 41
The defending District 13-3A champions arrived to the Brighton Gymnasium to take on the host Lady Cardinals.
The Friday night contest started off close with Brighton trialing to the visiting Dyer County Lady Choctaws 10-8 in the first quarter. When the buzzer sounded for the completion of the opening period, Dyer County was ahead 18-8. The Lady Choctaws used full court pressure and took advantage of Brighton miscues to win the game 82-41.
The Lady Choctaws started the second quarter on a 10-0 run to make the score 28-8. Brighton’s Makayla Rose ended the Lady Cardinal drought with a foul shot.
The Lady Cardinals picked up the scoring pace to close out the first half with 12 points. The halftime score was 45-21 in favor of Dyer County.
The defending league champs outscored Brighton 22-11 in the third quarter to seize total control. And the Lady Choctaws won the fourth quarter 15-9.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Dyer County 52, Brighton 51
The Brighton Cardinals were looking to establish control in the standings of District 13-3A picking up a second victory over the Dyer County Choctaws.
The Choctaws made the trip to Brighton Friday night looking to avenge the 70-63 defeat from Jan. 5. Dyer County jumped ahead early in the rematch in the Brighton Gymnasium 14-6. The Cardinals got a last-second tip, put back bucket from Taelyr Gatlin to cut the deficit to 8 points.
The Cardinals managed to score 10 points in the second quarter but still trailed 23-16 at the break.
It appeared in the second half Dyer County was on it’s way to victory grabbing a double-digit lead. Brighton rallied behind the shooting of senior guard Colby Butler in the fourth quarter. He hit a triple and jumper in the lane to make the score 50-45.
The score became 50-48 when Alex Malone hit a baseline three-pointer. The Choctaws hit a bucket to make the score 52-48.
After a Gatlin foul shot, the Cardinals were behind 52-49. Moments later Malone hit a layup with less than 20 seconds on the clock.
Brighton made a steal and had a chance to win the game with the score 52-51. The Cardinals had two shots bounce of the rim and Dyer County earned its regular season split.
