Millington, home to world’s largest inland Navy base, launches tribute to service, sacrifice, and the spirit of the U.S. Navy
The City of Millington, in partnership with the Navy League and the US Navy Memorial Foundation, proudly announced an effort to establish Tennessee’s first Lone Sailor Monument at last night’s State of the City Address by Mayor Larry Dagen.
This powerful symbol of honor and remembrance will stand as a permanent tribute to the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of the United States Navy.
This exciting monument will join a select group of Lone Sailor statues across the nation, and the first in Tennessee or the Mid-South, each representing the men and women who have served, are serving, and will serve in the Navy. Millington’s deep naval heritage, anchored by Naval Support Activity Mid-South, makes it a fitting home for this iconic figure. A dedicated steering committee, led by the Memphis Navy League and comprised of community leaders, veterans, and project partners, has been actively leading the vision for this significant project.
A Monument with Meaning
The Lone Sailor is more than a statue—it stands as a profound symbol of honor for all who have worn the uniform, respect for the families who support them, gratitude for the sacrifices made in service to the nation, and inspiration for future generations who will one day answer the call to serve.
Standing tall with sea bag in hand, the Lone Sailor reflects every Sailor’s journey—from the first day of boot camp to the last day of duty.
Dagen shared enthusiasm for the project, stating: “Millington’s history is deeply intertwined with the United States Navy, and the Lone Sailor Monument is a powerful reminder of the men and women who have stood watch for our nation. We are honored to help bring this symbol of courage and commitment to our community.”
A representative from the Memphis Navy League, Navy Veteran, and steering committee Chairman Victor Cooper added: “We are not just building a monument; we are creating a legacy. The Lone Sailor will stand for generations as a reminder of our community’s commitment to honoring those who serve our nation.”

Fundraising Efforts Underway
To bring this historic monument to life, the Navy League of Memphis and the Lone Sailor steering committee have launched a community fundraising campaign inviting residents, veterans, families, and local businesses to participate.
Funds raised will support:
•Construction and installation of the monument
•Development of the surrounding memorial space
•Educational and community programming tied to the unveiling
•Long-term preservation and maintenance
