The debut of the Zane Adams’ Millington Trojan Baseball team had a week delay. After ice, snow and rain cleared out the last week of February and first few days of March, it was sunny and 75 degrees when Adams led his team to the diamond at Brighton Baseball Stadium. The Trojans took the field against the Ripley Tigers. Millington got off to a slow start falling behind 8-0 after two innings. The Trojans held Ripley to three runs over the next four innings but the Tigers earned an 11-0 victory spoiling Adams’ debut coaching his alma mater. “You can’t throw strikes, they’re going to score,” Adams said of the bad start. “That’s the bottom line. We started throwing strikes later in the game. We only gave up 3 runs. You don’t throw strikes the first two innings, you give up 8 or 9.” Sean “Veggie” Oglesby took the mound in relief against Ripley and started to find a groove after giving up a run in the third inning. Oglesby struck out three Tiger players in a scoreless fourth and fifth inning. Ripley managed two runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-0 lead. The Tigers shutdown the Trojans once again from the mound to earn the victory.
“We’ve got to see pitching,” Adams concluded. “That was our first time on the field since Feb. 11. We haven’t had that kind of practice. So we’re just behind. We’ve just go to be able to see live arms.”
