Star Staff Reports

In 2020 several area events related to the awareness and funding for fighting breast cancer were canceled.

A few traditional happenings went virtual. COVID-19 had a large impact on a terrible disease that has been affecting many for decades. But the progress made in the fight against breast cancer continues and is picking up steam this October with the return of a few events in 2021.

With COVID-19 and the delta variant still present in our society, organizers of events in the Mid-South area are proceeding with caution to keep event-goers safe.

Before coronavirus took over the consciences of American and world-wide health, cancer dominated its share of headlines.

One in 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime according to the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society started “Making Strides Against Breast as a walk to unite communities in the fight against this deadly disease. Today, Making Strides is the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation – and we do more than just walk.

“We raise money to help the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking breast cancer research and provide patient services like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near treatment, and a live 24/7 cancer helpline. But we can’t do any of this without the help of people like you.”

The Making Strides movement raises lifesaving funds that support breast cancer patients, survivors, thrivers, and caregivers through every step of the journey.

“We’ve enhanced digital offerings available to anyone across the nation, including one-on-one breast cancer patient support services and the use of video chat to safely connect patients, caregivers, and family members with valuable services and resources through our website, in addition to a 24/7 helpline.”
