Do you have cynophobia?

No, it’s not a new virus outbreak. Cynophobia is the unreasonable fear of dogs. Such a crippling fear of dogs can be quite limiting, especially if you have dog-owning friends or relatives or deliver pizzas or packages.

As you know, avoiding dogs completely can be nearly impossible.

You might find yourself limiting contact with dog owners, even to the point of avoiding family gatherings. You may be unable to enjoy outdoor activities such as walking in the park, hiking, or camping since many outdoor enthusiasts bring their dogs. Over time, your normal routine may become extremely restricted as you attempt to prevent any accidental contact with a dog.

As CrashtheLawDog accompanies me in my outings almost everybody goes out of their way to pet him. He even has a vest that says, “pet me please.”

I am continuously surprised to meet folks who are deathly afraid of him. They will freeze in fear, or run. They are far more likely to hurt themselves running, than my peaceful dog would ever hurt them.

One lady said that she was terrified of my large dog because he had big teeth. I reminded her that I have fists and could really hurt her —-but I won’t—because it’s not in my character. In fact, I would defend her. Dogs have characters too.

This doesn’t mean there’s not a healthy skepticism about dogs you don’t know. It’s still a very good idea to ask before you pet. It’s a good idea to realize that looking a dog in the eye and smiling is actually a threat to the dog. (That’s why children get nipped in the face.)

But an unreasonable fear is so limiting and makes people look silly when they weigh 300 pounds and they’re afraid of a Chihuahua.

So, if you’ve had enough, I have great news. The fear of dogs responds well to treatment. There are some things you can do yourself, without the help of a professional to help you get over this.

The most common is known officially as “systematic desensitization “. While that sounds fancy, it basically is to begin to progress back towards your fear in increments. And as you train your mind not to tell your body that you’re in danger (running from a bear) you will become more relaxed. You may watch videos or you may sit in a room with the dog that is trained. And each progressive step is able to be taken to the point where you can actually pet friendly dogs without significant anxiety.

With a bit of effort, there is no reason you must continue to cope with symptoms on your own. Recently, a lovely lady cut my hair and she was terrified of my dog sitting in the truck. I asked her if she was sick of being afraid yet? And she said she was. And I said, “I’m a good tipper, so in addition to a great tip I’m gonna help you get over your fear of dogs if you really want to.”  In just a few minutes she was taking selfies with CrashtheLawDog.

He has his own Facebook and Instagram accounts. He’s usually at my office with me, so feel free to come by and give him a pet.
