It is said that everyone has at least one gift—a unique talent, passion, or skill that sets them apart.

Finding your gift is a journey of self-discovery that can lead to a fulfilling and purposeful life. It’s not about necessarily about being the best at something, as you may be great at gymnastics but hate it—but about uncovering what makes you come alive and sharing it with the world. Here’s how to embark on that journey.

Ask yourself:

•What do I do effortlessly that others find challenging?

For example, if you love solving problems that others find too complex, your gift might lie in strategic thinking or innovation. If connecting with people energizes you, where others find it off-putting, your gift could be in communication or leadership.

•What do I do when I have free time or would volunteer to do?

Reflect on What Sparks Joy: Start by exploring what interests or excites you. Think about moments when you lose track of time or feel deeply fulfilled. These maybe clues to your gift.

Experiment and Explore Finding your gift often requires trying new things. Step outside your comfort zone and experiment with different hobbies, skills, or roles. Take a painting class, volunteer, or learn a new instrument. Don’t fear failure—it’s a teacher. Shadow a person in some profession or job. Each experience helps you understand what resonates. Thomas Edison didn’t discover his gift for invention until he embraced relentless experimentation. Your gift may reveal itself through trial and error.

Seek Feedback from Others Sometimes, others see our gifts before we do. Ask trusted friends, family, or colleagues what they think you’re naturally good at. They might notice your knack for storytelling, problem-solving, or inspiring others. Be open to their insights, even if they surprise you. A mentor or coach can also provide guidance, helping you refine your strengths and align them with your purpose.

Align with Purpose Your gift often ties to what you value most. Reflect on how you want to impact the world. Do you want to create, teach, heal, or innovate? When your gift aligns with a sense of purpose, it becomes a powerful force. For instance, if you’re skilled at writing and passionate about the environment, your gift might be crafting stories that inspire action.

Embrace the Journey Finding your gift isn’t a race—it’s a lifelong process. Be patient and trust that every step brings you closer. Your gift may evolve over time, shaped by experiences and growth. Embrace it, nurture it, and share it generously. When you live in alignment with your gift, you not only enrich your life but also inspire others to find theirs.
