Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 5-9. The NSA Mid-South Fire Department has various educational and community outreach events scheduled throughout the week.
Monday, October 5: Sparky and the fire trucks was at the CDC at 10 a.m. At 3 p.m. at the CDC firefighters did a demonstration to show children what a firefighter looks like in their protective gear. This is designed to ensure that children are not afraid of firefighters in an emergency, but know to go to them for help.
Tuesday, October 6: “Firefighter Olympics” were held at the fire department starting at 10 a.m. It was open to all (adult) base employees who wish to compete in teams of two. There will be hot dogs and drinks free of charge while supplies last. Trophy will be presented to the first-place team.
Wednesday, October 7: At 4 p.m. Red Cross will be at Youth Center for a presentation on the “Pillow Case Project”. This is a disaster preparedness program for children. There will also be a presentation on smoke detectors. On the same day at 4 p.m. fire trucks and firefighters will be at the Teen center. Teens will receive a fire safety presentation and have the opportunity to spray the fire hose.
Thursday, October 8: Fire extinguisher training will be provided to anyone interested on a “walk-in” basis. This will be conducted at the fire department from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. using a propane fueled fire extinguisher trainer.
Friday, October 9: Open house from 9 a.m. to noon at the fire department. Short rides will be provided for children on the fire trucks. All attendants will have the option of being escorted through the fire department trainer under simulated smoke conditions.
