Just two weeks into the 2016 season, the Millington Trojan Baseball’s campaign is apparently on a roller coaster ride. Head Coach Zane Adams is building chemistry with a roster of seniors and underclassmen limited in varsity experience. After dropping their first three games during opening week, the Trojans rallied to win a pair of games to close Week One. Then Week Two began with the Flag City Classic hosted by the Trojans and crosstown rival the Tipton-Rosemark Academy Rebels. After dropping their opener in the Classic, the Trojans were looking to rebound March 22 at Miles Park against the ECS Eagles. Behind the pitching of Jordan Tincher, the Trojans were in good shape with three scoreless innings. Then the Eagles manufactured a run in the fourth inning to finally take the lead. ECS went on to score in the next two innings to prevail 7-0. “Jordy threw a good game,” Adams said. “He’s the type of guy that once a good team sees him two or three times, he’s going to start getting hit. But I thought he threw well the fourth and fifth innings. They just hit the ball. They are a very talented lineup. They threw some hits together to get a big inning.” ECS started the fifth inning with back-to-back triples. The Eagles had clean hits to the outfield to make the score 2-0. The rest of the frame, ECS mixed some hits and took advantage of Trojan miscues in the field to jump ahead 5-0. The Eagles iced the game with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. “Tonight, that was probably their No. 1 or No. 2 pitcher,” Adams noted. “He’s pretty good. We just couldn’t get anything going. We’d get one or two hits here or there. But when we had a chance to get a big inning, we took ourselves out of it by making a mental mistake.” In the format of the Flag City Classic the co-host Trojans and Rebels scheduled teams to prepare for league games later in the season. The Rebels took on public school teams and Millington challenged private school squads. Adams said the early part of the week of the Flag City Classic was a preview of what’s to come in District 15-2A.
“We start district Monday and Tuesday,” Adams concluded. “So these guys we’re seeing this week, we’re going to start seeing every Monday and Tuesday. That’s what I told my guys, ‘Take what we’re going to see this week and be prepared for what we’ll see next week.’”
