From Millington Public Library

Millington Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program offers free fun for the whole family.

The program theme is “Tails and Tales” and is all about our animal friends. The Kick-Off Party is Saturday, June 5, and each participant will receive a free lunch and goodie bag.

According to Library Director Stephanie Kinsler, the six-week program is a great way to keep children reading and learning through the summer. “Children who read and participate in fun, educational activities in the summer can retain and improve skills learned in school. Visiting the library is an easy and free way to keep kids engaged over the summer.”

Summer reading is for all ages with weekly rewards given out to each group: children, tween/teen, and adults.

Readers can participate by filling out a paper or online reading log. Aside from reading rewards, the library also has prize drawings weekly and earn weekly chances to win a grand prize.

The Kiwanis Club of Millington has sponsored our grand prizes for many years, and this year, three readers will win a Kindle Fire tablet.

In addition to reading for fun, the library has a full schedule of events. On Saturday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m., Wildlife Biologist Bob Tarter of Animalogy will present some real, live critters and talk about how each one uses its tail. The library welcomes back Tommy of Tommy Terrific’s Wacky Magic Show on Saturday, June 26 at 11 a.m. The Science Guys from Nashville Show will entertain all ages on Saturday, July 10 at 2 p.m. Craft Days will be every Tuesdays at 2 and Storytimes are Wednesdays at 11:15, and all programs will be outside weather permitting.

“The library staff is very excited to get back to having in person programming this summer. We think our community is excited, too, after a long year of Covid quarantining.

All of our events will be outside on the library front lawn, and we are so thankful to our Library Boosters for sponsoring our shows and to area businesses for providing some amazing rewards for readers!”

The library also has a big screen and will show two movies this summer. On Saturday June 19 at 12:30 p.m., community members can bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy free popcorn and watch How to Train a Dragon. The Secret Life of Pets will be shown on July 17 at 1 p.m. at our Happy Trails Tails & Tales Party. Throughout summer reading, the library will be accepting donations for Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County, and the shelter will have adoptable pets at our final event.
