NORTH CHARLOTTE — The Millington Trojan Wrestling team left Creek Wook High School in Dickson County Saturday with the runner-up team trophy after the Class A-AA Region-4 Individual Tournament.
Now nine Trojans are heading to the 2020 TSSAA Wrestling State Tournament at the Williamson County Agricultural Exposition Arena Thursday-Saturday. Among the Millington grapplers heading to State, Jaden Tincher is the champion in his weight class.
“Region 4 champion,” Jeremy Tincher, father and coach said. “Jaden has worked incredibly hard for six years. Thanks to the coaches that helped to get him here. He told me today that it didn’t feel like Regions. I told him because he has been here a few times on the big stage. Now let’s go win the (State) championship.”
Other Trojans joining Tincher earning a spot at State are TJ Graves (second-place); Drew Hassenberg, Jahmir O’Kain and Milton Yarbrough (third-place); Malik Wooten, Lonzell Blackwell, Garrett Haley and Verdo Young (fourth-place).
It has been about a quarter of a century since the Trojans have placed as a team in duals and individual Regionals. Millington was Region 4 Team Duals and Individuals runner-ups, finishing behind Fairview.
Coach Tincher shared a post on Facebook moments after the triumph in North Charlotte in preparations for Franklin.
“MCHS Trojan Wrestling 2019-2020 season has been incredible,” he wrote. “We have accomplished things that haven’t been done in 26 years. We finished second to Fairview who was the State Championship Runner Up. They are very good.
“This team has had a fantastic season and we aren’t done as we travel to the State Championship next weekend,” he continued. “This could not have been possible without the community support.  Our Region was in Nashville so that means road trips and costs to compete. We have had tremendous support with Trojan 100, sponsors and other fundraising.  Your support helped these young men and we brought home lots of hardware.”
While the Trojans still have some business to take care of in this weekend, Tincher and the Trojan Wrestling family are starting to spread another piece of big news. The Region 4 championships will be coming to Millington in 2021.
“We have 15 schools with wrestlers coming to Millington and only Bolton and East won’t be staying in our hotels and family’s eating in our restaurants,” Tincher noted. “We want to purchase a new wrestling mat to have the Region Championship Finals on.  The cost of the mat with artwork of our Trojan Head and lettering is $9,000.  With all of the support we have been able to pay the travel costs and we have some money in the account dedicated to the purchase of mat.”
Trojan Wrestling is getting the word out about needs to prepare for the Regionals.
“We need your help former wrestlers, alumni, community supporters and anybody else that has seen this program come back in the last few years to where the entire state knows where the “38053” is,” Tincher said. “We walk in to the gym now and the competition knows …. we didn’t just come to compete. We come to take over.
“Thank you for your continued support and please let us know if you want to support our new wrestling mat,” Tincher concluded. “We can take checks to the school noting that is for the wrestling mat and PayPal. My number is 901-331-2747 in the event you have questions. Thank you and there so many great things happening in our community. We are making Millington a better place one day at a time.”
