Star Staff Reports

Another round of ice hit the Mid-South last week leading to power outages and school closings.

Last Thursday, Tipton County was one of the hardest hit areas leading to hundreds of “trees down” phone calls to the Sheriff’s office.

Overall areas in Millington were hit hard by the storms, causing widespread power outages, downed branches and hazardous roadways. MLGW crews were working on restoring power to parts of Millington into Friday afternoon.

Northern Shelby County was affected by the ice storm with Millington Municipal Schools closing daily operations for students Thursday and Friday.

E.E. Jeter School for Kindergarten to eighth grade lost power leading to Memphis Shelby County Schools closing it down the rest of the week.

Classes resumed Monday at E.E. Jeter K-8 School once power was restored. It was Thursday when students and staff suffered the power outage (with MSCS open both days). But with Jeter located in a wooded area, it was a fallen tree that broke a powerline causing the outage.

MSCS spokeswoman Jerica Phillips said the district responded immediately.

“Our teams went out and did an additional assessment of the area, and we made a determination to dismiss school early,” said Phillips.

Parents from Jeter want the MSCS decision makers to remember the environmental difference their school has compared to those schools located throughout the urban areas.
