The 69th National Day of Prayer was observed by the City of Millington at the Millington First Baptist Church located at 5010 West Union Road.
Millington Mayor Terry Jones opened up this year’s event in the sanctuary with just the participants and close family present. Some traditional faces headed to the podium to pray for categories government, church, military, family, education, media, business and the National Prayer.
Clery reappearing for the event to pray for the national and Millington community were Faith Assembly of God Pastor Gary Forsee and Promiseland Missionary Baptist Church’s OC Horton Jr.
Making a return to pray was Christ Ministries Prophetess Diane Norwood.
New faces to the microphone this year were Millington Central High School student Tyler Byrson, freelancer Thomas Miller, businesswoman Robbie Spearman and Millington Fire Chief Gary Graves. Jones got the spiritual occasion started with an opening outlining the purpose of the evening. He offered encouragement and thanked all those who made their way out to Baker. Across America, several Christians acknowledged the National Day of Prayer. Each year, on the first Thursday of May, the U.S. marks the National Day of Prayer. Although the day of observance has its roots in the American Revolution, it wasn’t formally recognized until President Harry S. Truman signed a law to annually recognize it in 1952.
