Star Staff Reports

When a local business closes, it’s often not a positive thing. The loss of a hometown company can be a blow to a small community’s economy and signal the end of an era for personal relationships and service.

Luckily, this won’t be the case in Brighton. After 17 years as its owner and manager, Oneal Tankersley sold Brighton Lumber Company to Maximus Building Supply (formerly Thrifty Building Supply). Maximus is a local family-owned business which started in Collierville in 1984 and has locations in Collierville, Olive Branch, and Oxford. Richard Cooper is the President and owner and is committed to getting involved and supporting the local community. Maximus has been providing building supplies in Tipton County for more than 20 years.

While he’s no longer at the helm of the lumber company, Tankersley doesn’t intend to disappear from the building industry he’s been part of for more than 40 years. “I’m retiring from selling materials, but I will continue building custom homes in Tipton County, and I plan to buy my building supplies from Maximus,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be turning over the store to the Maximus team, and I know they will provide the quality and service the builders in this area expect.”

Cooper spoke very highly of Tankersley, as well. “I really enjoyed working with Oneal during this transaction. He is a good man with a wealth of knowledge. We look forward to providing building supplies for the homes he’s building and becoming a part of the local community.”

The lumber yard will be closed through the end of July to reorganize and bring in more inventory. During that time, the showroom will be open and will be offering substantial discounts on most hardware, electrical, plumbing, and sporting good items. The store will fully reopen on August 1 as Maximus Building Supply.
