If you have a heart for children, then the Millington Kiwanis Club may be the perfect civic organization for you, because children are its primary concern, according the Millington Kiwanis Club President Steve Broome. The local Kiwanis Club, is one of hundreds of clubs across the globe affiliated with Kiwanis International, an organization that cultivates competent, capable and compassionate leaders dedicated to children’s causes worldwide. Locally, the Millington Kiwanis Club is currently selling live Christmas trees at the Millington Farmers Market, located at 5152 Easley St., to raise funds toward $1,000 scholarships it awards each year to a student at Millington Central and Munford High School. The Christmas trees are for sale at the market from 4-8 p.m., weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and from 1-6 p.m. on Sundays. Prices range from $45-75, and are negotiable. To help fund the scholarships, the Kiwanis Club also hosts an annual pancake breakfast in the Spring. “It’s a great bunch of people working together in the community to support our local schools,” Broome said. There are Key Clubs at both Millington Central and Munford High School affiliated with the Kiwanis Club. The Key Club is the oldest and largest high school service organization in the world. The clubs promote community service and foster leadership skills as the students hold meetings, run for elected office and plan community projects. Broome noted that both local Key Clubs have been actively involved in Kiwanis International’s “Project Eliminate,” a worldwide effort by the organization to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus. The Millington Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday morning, except the third Thursday of the month at Millington First United Methodist Church located at 8029 Wilkinsville Road, at 7 a.m. for breakfast. “If you’d like a good breakfast,” Broome quipped, “come join us.” The meetings usually include a speaker from a local organization or local government. On the third Thursday of each month the Kiwanis Club meets for dinner at 6:30 p.m., at Olympic Steak & Pizza, located at 8500 Wilkinsville Road.
