Dear Editor:

Millington Municipal Schools would like to request from the City of Millington, a Millington Police Officer to be stationed at Millington Primary School for the 2022-23 school year. Our proposal for the police officer to fill the position as School Resource Officer for MPS is for the officer will remain with the City of Millington Police Department and have a daily duty station at MPS during the 2022-23 school year from August to the end of May.

The police officer will still be employed by City of Millington allowing the officer to maintain state and local law enforcement authority to enforce state TCA and city ordinance. This officer can be utilized as a patrol officer for the community during holidays, fall and spring breaks. Officers will return to duty as patrol officers when school is out of season.

MMSD will supplement the officer’s salary during the school year. This will save the City of Millington funds during the months the officer is stationed at MPS. Millington Municipal School System currently has SROs at the Intermediate School and the Middle High School provided by Shelby County Sheriff Department. The SCSD does not provide SROs for any elementary schools in the county. MPS is the only campus without an SRO within MMSD.

This will provide a protected and secure peace of mind for our teachers., children and parents during these unpredictable times. #OneMillington

James E. Griffin
