Last year Christine “Crystal” Alston took her talents to some of the area churches to give back to the community. Now the Millington beautician wants to expand her efforts along side some of her colleagues in the Labor of Love: Using Our Gift to Bless Others. Alston, owner of Crystal’s Hair Salon, is organizing the event with fellow local barbers and stylists giving free haircuts and styles to children aged 5-18. “I wanted to reach out to the community giving us a chance to show our talents and let people know we are here,” Alston said. “We want to give back, especially to our school-aged children.” The event will be held this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for all children and all ethnic backgrounds at Crystal’s Hair Salon. “Once I reached out to other barbers and beauticians, the response had gone very well,” Alston said. “The response has been so good I can’t hold her at my salon. We’re narrowing down another venue.” The 1989 Millington Central High School graduate said she is not surprised the hair care industry of Flag City is welling to participate in this event. With a growing list of participants, Alston said they will be able to perform many different styles for the children. Alston brings 25 years of experience to the Labor of Love. She has been doing hair in Millington for several years moving from Navy Road to her current 7941 C Street location in May 2010. Her professional care started after she graduated from Jett College. The Millington native has always been involved in community outreach giving back at churches for years. Alston hopes this Saturday is the start of an annual event that will benefit the children and their parents. “We do encourage people to donate can goods so we can donate them to the Millington Crisis Center,” Alston concluded. “We want them to have a chance to give back too. It’s all about giving back.”

Crystal’s Hair Salon is located at 7941 C Street in Millington. For more information, call 873-2549.
