Feb. 24 was the launch date of the countywide effort “Text-to-9-1-1.”
The capability to Text-to-9-1-1 is now available throughout Shelby County, including Collierville, enabling all citizens the means to contact their local 9-1-1 dispatching office via Text-to-9-1-1.
The Shelby County 9-1-1 Emergency Communications District along with officials from Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Millington, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) and the Shelby County Fire Department, worked together to bring this service throughout the county allowing more accessibility to emergency services.
SCSO is now able to communicate with people in or near unincorporated Shelby County through text 911 in the case of an emergency in which they cannot contact our dispatchers by phone call.
To use the new feature, enter the numbers 911 into the “to” field. Then, text the exact location of the emergency and briefly describe what kind of emergency you’re having.
Text-to-911 is for use in an emergency only. SCSO still encourages the public to call 911 in emergencies when possible.
