Brother and sister pairing Zachary and Isabelle Rada chaperoned their Labrador Retrievers, also brother and sister, Charley and Chloe around the Millington Sports Plex located near Bill Knight last Tuesday during National Night Out. The Millington version of the annual countrywide tradition was held Aug. 3 hosted by the Millington Police Department. Other participants in the event were the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, CNIC Navy Police, Millington Fire Department, the CN and other public servants from the military.

The Rada children were joining their father, a member of the SCSO, for a night of fun and awareness. Other area children like Emily Westpfahl, 9, enjoyed balloons and receiving facts about police service. Joab Thomas, 4, waited in line to learn about the CN serving the railroad system keeping the public safe between bites of cotton candy from Auntie Em’s.

The purpose of National Night Out is to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. It provides an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

National Night Out was founded in 1984 with $15,000 from the National Crime Prevention Council’s grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
