Star Staff Reports

Last week the 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational was held in Memphis. The 50th anniversary of the event featured middle school and high school teams and squads from across the Mid-South including the Millington Lady Trojans.

Millington senior Savannah Spearman was recognized with the MLK Tournament Academic Scholarship Award winning a $500 scholarship. Spearman is a two-sport athletic, member of the Millington Central Middle High School Choir and a part of various clubs at the school.

Last night Spearman and the Lady Trojans dominated Macon Road at home.

Millington Lady Trojans Head Coach Jason Nichols employed his players to turn up the pressure in a 72-8 win over Macon Road.

Once again, it was the Millington defense that set the stage. On Saturday they had 25 steals against Southwind and they took even that to the next level with 38 steals vs Macon Road. Jontavia Bonner led the Trojans with 21 pts, 9 steals and 5 rebounds. Keria McGhee added 18 pts and 10 steals. Micaiah Halliburton had 10 pts and 4 steals and freshman Ayanna Ransom had 4 pts, 5 rebounds, 6 steals and 2 assists.

Scoring
Jontavia Bonner-21, Keria McGhee-18, Micaiah Halliburton-10, Madison Turner, Breanna Hulsey-5, Kayla Dotson, Ayanna Ransom-4, Tia Bryson-3, McKenzie Chambers-2

Millington travels to Dyer Co on Friday which should be a very good early season test.

IN BOYS ACTION… Trojans remain unbeaten with blowout win over Macon Road.

There’s a song by the group Outkast called “Hey Ya!” and in that song, there’s a line that says “what’s cooler than being cool” and of course the response is “ice cold”. So let’s just flip that around a bit and ask what’s hotter than being hot. In this case the correct response would be the Millington Trojan basketball team on Tuesday night vs Macon Road as they remain unbeaten in a 96-18 win.

The Trojans shot 76% (29-38) from 2 and 52% (11-21) from 3. Everyone played and contributed something in one way or another. Chris Barnes was simply spectacular as he only missed one shot all night long and finished with 23 points and a dunk that electrified his teammates on the bench. BJ Gilmore continued his solid play as he was in double figures for the fifth straight game and finished with 22 pts and 4 steals. Blake Garner had a terrific all around game with 12 pts, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds. Freshman Tyler McCrary saw his first varsity action and finished with 6 rebounds.

Scoring
Chris Barnes-23, BJ Gilmore-22, Blake Garner-12, Seth Grandberry-10, Brandon Payne-8, Greg Johnson-7, Josh Harris-6, Diego Reyes-4, Tristan Temple-3, Cody McGhee-1

Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Dyer Co on Friday. The Choctaws have a history of really good basketball teams and this should be a good early season test for the Black and Gold. (info courtesy of www.millingtontrojans.com)
