Munford High School and the Cougar Baseball program are mourning another tragic loss. Steven “Steve-O” Kendrick died Sunday morning in a motor vehicle wreck in Arkansas. He was 20 years old. According to an Arkansas State Police report, Kendrick was the passenger in a Ford F-150 truck about 6 a.m. when it left the road in St. Francis County. The vehicle went into a ditch and struck a driveway near the town of Colt. The driver, Kendrick’s Southwest Tennessee teammate, Nicholson Sparks was injured in the accident coming home from a duck hunting trip. Back in November, tragedy struck the Cougar Baseball program when Kendrick’s teammate and classmate, Chase Suggs, died in an ATV accident in Drummonds. Kendrick was a four-year varsity player for Cougar Baseball and played varsity football his senior year. He helped guide Munford to the State Baseball Tournament in 2017. Playing various positions, Kendrick caught a no-hitter from teammate Nick Johnson and recorded the final out in the field in the Sectional game against Collierville. His on the field trademark became his home run hitting. Kendrick led the state with 10 dingers as a sophomore. Kendrick participated in a home run showcase in Florida while with the Cougars. Almost to the date in 2018, Kendrick was signing his letter of intent to join the Southwest Tennessee Baseball program. “Help me to realize that you’re only as good as your weakest player,” Kendrick told The Star that day. “Every teammate needs everyone else. Moving from pitcher to position player we had to have a lot of guys pitch. We had to go deep into our rotation because we’re the smallest school in our league. Everybody getting there job done showed me you have to be able to play multiple position. “The signing takes a lot of weight off my shoulders — hoping people are looking at you or hoping people will recruit you,” Steve added. “But with that weight lifted I can just have fun and play baseball with my friends my senior year.”
