Around October, concerns were reported about overdue rent owed to the City of Millington from Shelby County.
The City of Millington has an update on the matter after last night’s vote to pay back $28,000.
““Yesterday, the Shelby County Commission approved an item addressing the Shelby County Clerk’s overdue rent in Millington,” said City of Millington Manager Frankie Dakin. “We are grateful to the Commission and to Mayor Lee Harris’ administration for stepping in and taking responsible action to resolve another issue involving the Shelby County Clerk’s office.”
The City of Millington might take legal action against Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert in a dispute over unpaid rent at the 4836 Navy Road location.
According to the City of Millington, Halbert is nearly $40,000 behind on rent. It was alleged that no payment has been since December 2023.
“From the beginning, the City of Millington has been clear about our goals,” Dakin noted, “keep the County Clerk’s office open in Millington, collect the rent owed without unnecessary litigation, and protect taxpayers. The County Commission took the action needed to make that happen.
“To be clear, the Commission should not have had to intervene, but we are glad they did,” he added. “Clerk Halbert had every opportunity, as well as the resources in her budget, to resolve this issue. Instead, she chose not to act and attempted to mislead the public. The County Commission’s action shows that in Shelby County, governments do not have to take one another to court or allow a single agent of chaos to stop them from doing the right thing. We appreciate the leadership shown and look forward to putting this matter behind us.”
