Next Wave of In-Demand Jobs: Fields That Barely Exist Today

Trades like plumbing, HVAC, electricians and welders remain in demand, and AI proof.

But in many jobs, things are changing fast. For years, everyone chased computer coding, but generative AI is already better at much of it. Just ten years ago, “cybersecurity analyst” sounded like something from the Terminator movies. Today every major organization has an entire dedicated cybersecurity department. The same pattern is repeating now.

The real next technological opportunities may lie in roles that barely exist yet—jobs created by the very technologies and global pressures that are disrupting older ones. Here are some:

1. AI Ethics & Governance OfficersThese professionals audit algorithms for bias, write corporate AI policies, and ensure compliance with fast-evolving regulations. The role sits at the intersection of technology, law, philosophy, and risk management.Entry path: Bachelor’s in computer science, philosophy, law, or public policy + short professional certificates (many universities and platforms like Coursera now offer them). Self-taught routes exist for those with strong tech + ethics backgrounds, but most employers prefer the degree + cert combo.

2. Quantum Technology Specialists (engineers, programmers, application developers)

Quantum computers will solve problems classical machines never can—drug discovery, materials design, financial modeling, secure communications. The field is moving from labs to industry.Entry path: Bachelor’s in physics, computer science, math, or electrical engineering is enough for many software and systems roles; only research-heavy positions typically demand a PhD. Online quantum courses (IBM Qiskit, Microsoft Quantum, etc.) plus internships are already producing hireable talent.

3. Biofabrication & Synthetic Biology EngineersThey grow organs, lab-made meat (yuck), and biomaterials in bioreactors using 3D bioprinting and cell culture. Applications range from regenerative medicine to sustainable food.Entry path: Bachelor’s or master’s in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, or mechanical engineering with biology focus. Regulatory knowledge is a big plus; many start in related lab roles and specialize.

4. Climate Resilience & Adaptation EngineersCities, insurers, and governments need experts who model flood risks, redesign infrastructure, and build “climate-proof” supply chains.Entry path: Degree in civil/environmental engineering, urban planning, or environmental science. Specialized certificates in climate risk modeling or GIS are increasingly common and valuable.

5. Circular Economy DesignersThey redesign products and supply chains so materials are reused indefinitely instead of becoming waste—think take-back programs, modular electronics, and zero-waste manufacturing.Entry path: Often a design, engineering, or sustainability degree, but many professionals transition from product design or supply-chain roles via targeted certificates (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, etc.). Self-taught routes exist for those with strong systems-thinking and materials knowledge.

The common thread? These roles reward human judgment, interdisciplinary thinking, and ethical oversight—exactly the areas where AI still struggles. Basic coding skills will remain useful, but the premium will go to people who can direct, audit, and apply emerging technologies responsibly.

The lesson from cybersecurity is clear: the biggest job growth often comes from solving the problems created by the last wave of innovation. Start building foundational STEM or interdisciplinary knowledge now, add targeted certificates, and stay curious. The departments of 2035 are being invented today—by the people who see the gaps first.
