The Millington Lady Trojans’ “Bluff City Invitational Week” concluded Thursday evening with a visit from the Whitehaven Lady Tigers.
The girls from Flag City were 2-0 entering the game at Hornet Field beating Crosstown and Memphis Central by a combined score of 15-2. The Lady Tigers tried to take advantage of some Millington lineup changes to keep the game close.
The Lady Trojans managed a 3-0 lead at halftime. Then Millington turned up the intensity and limited the Whitehaven offense to 3 shots in the final 40 minutes to prevail 7-0.
Despite three convincing victories over Memphis area teams during the week, Millington Coach Rosemary Boswell said the Lady Trojans are sharpening up for the October postseason run.
“Still working on making good passes and connections, we’re still working on our corners,” she said. “We’re working on a lot of stuff. Communication between our top two scorers Keria and Bedford. Just communication I think is the big thing.”
Keria McGhee added another goal to her season’s total against Whitehaven. Lady Trojan leading scorer for the season Bedford netted her second hat-trick in as many games. Her third goal made the score 5-0 over the Lady Tigers.
Rilee Ervin scored against Whitehaven after having a pair of goals against Memphis Central.And Tess Cook tallied a pair of scores with the goal of the night. The final point for Millington came from a corner kick by Cook’s sister Christina. Once the ball was in the air, Tess darted through a pack of Lady Tigers for a header.Boswell said she was pleased with the winning effort as players like Angela Calva and Kourtney Tinkey had to make quick adjustments.“We’ve had a couple of injuries. Jaycee is still hurt and Lexi (Thompson) was hurt today,” she noted.
“So we kind of subbed in and had some of our younger girls start. We put Angela up top and she’s a junior.“She got the start and played the whole first half,” Boswell continued. “She did extremely well. Then we had Courtney Tinky start at sweeper because Lexi was hurt and she did an outstanding job.”
Millington will conclude the regular season this Thursday with a trip to St. Mary’s before hosting the District Tournament semifinals at Hornet Field on Oct. 5.
