COVINGTON — The game between the Covington Chargers and Millington Trojans took on extra importance Jan. 26 with both teams needing a victory to improve their position in the upcoming district tournament. The contest in the Covington Gymnasium started off tight with Millington ahead 8-6 after a Kelvin Jones layup. Then the Chargers closed out the first quarter on a 12-2 run behind the play of Malcolm Taylor, Reggie Holmes (left) and Ish Jones. The Chargers maintained their intensity over the next three quarters to prevail 65-48. Holmes sparked Covington in the second quarter with a free throw and steal leading to a bucket to make the score 27-13. The Trojans had a couple of highlights in the second quarter with a Bryce Mattox three-point play that made the score 27-16. Later in the period Trojan Cameron Crawford made a layup on a fast break and drained a three-pointer to make the score 36-23 in favor of Covington at the break.

The Chargers outscored Millington 19-9 in the third quarter to build a 55-31 advantage. The Trojans outscored Covington 17-10 in the fourth quarter.
